CO-CHAIRS

Rahamim Seliktar
Drexel University
United States

Brief Bio
Rami Seliktar obtained a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s in applied Mechanics, from The Technion, Israel Institute of Technology and his Doctorate in Bioengineering from Strathclyde University in Scotland, UK. Throughout his professional career, Rami Seliktar held academic appointments in several institutions worldwide. His Specialties are in Lower Limb Prosthetics and Human Performance, Orthopedic Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Engineering. He was one the founding faculty members of The Julius Silver Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the Technion and was a founding member of the School of Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University. He published more than 150 papers and received numerous grants from governments, foundations, Industries and Hospitals. He was a founder of one of the first Gait Labs and generated substantial data on human performance (normal & pathological). Since 1983 Rami joined Drexel University and is presently full Professor and Vice Director of the School of Biomedical Engineering Science and Health Systems. Prof. Seliktar serves on a number of international editorial boards and is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Bioengineering and Biomedical Science. He is an elected Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.
Tariq Rahman
Nemours/A.I. duPont
United States

Brief Bio
Dr. Tariq Rahman completed his Ph.D. in mechanical Engineering 1990 from Drexel University. He then joined the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children as a post-doctoral fellow. Dr. Rahman is currently Senior Research Engineer at the duPont Hospital for Children and Director of the Center for Orthopedics Research and Development (CORD). He also holds the position of Research Professor in the School for Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware. He has over 65 publications in the area of rehabilitation engineering on issues relating to tremor reduction, robotics, orthotics and orthopedics. He has 6 patents. He is the inventor of the WREX exoskeleton which is a commercially successful inexpensive device to assist children with arm movement.

SCOPE

The loss of a limb or limb function can be very debilitating and may require technological intervention. A person who looses an arm needs a prosthetic replacement; a person whose arm functionality has been compromised may be at an even greater disadvantage as the flail (or spastic) arm obstructs the function of an assistive device; a person who has lost a leg may be able to use crutches or a wheelchair, but the optimal solution is a prosthetic replacement. There are a myriad of conditions, which would necessitate the use of an artificial appendage or mobility device.
The complexity of dealing with Bio-devices of this kind stems primarily from the multidisciplinary nature of the topic and hence device development, require very careful consideration.
